Dear Joanne,

I came upon your blog from the Mixed Up Files (which is great, by the way!). Really enjoyed your comments about balance (or lack thereof). Mother of five here (three in college, two still at home), no published children’s books to her credit (yet, I hope), and a terrible grasp of time management/ability to be both a writer and a mom. In other words, I still feel the need to strictly compartmentalize the two parts of myself, which basically means I can’t FINISH anything I start to write!

Blah. Enough whining from me. Really just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your blog. Think we would be friends in person (I promise I’m not a crazy stalker).

Yep. I hear you. Lists work for me and since I started keeping them in a notebook with a line in front of each item for a X when completed, I can quickly see what’s been done and what hasn’t. The “hasn’t” is usually bigger in number.

Another thing I tried was saying no to requests for crits or dinner out once in a while. It helps a bit.

Glad I’m not alone! Hang in there. I just try to remind myself that life is a marathon, not a sprint. Day by day I persist toward what matters in my life as best I can.

It feels like every week is that way lately for me, so , sorry, I don’t have any strategies for you. I do try to write a bit every day (mainly by getting up before everyone else) and give myself a limited time for reading blogs, websites, etc. Somedays, it helps. Anyway, I’ll be following your blog to see if anyone has any brilliant insights (found you via the Blue Boards)..

Great post and great tips! You are right, if we get too caught up in trying to complete something we miss the fun of creating it in the first place. Thanks for reminding me of that!
